It can be a dull ache, but is often a sharp, piercing pain. The pain may come from the ear itself, but can also be referred from another area, such as the jaw or throat. Cause What causes earache? Earache can be caused by several conditions: Ear infection Earwax Perforation of the eardrum Irritated jaw joint Tumour Treatment What treatments are there for earache? The ENT doctor examines the ear canal and eardrum to determine the cause of the pain. First step Examination of the ear canal and eardrum Otoscopy is used to check for inflammation, infection or other causes. For infection Medication Depending on the cause: pain relief, ear drops or antibiotics. For persistent symptoms Further investigation If the cause is unclear, targeted further investigation follows.
