With sinusitis this mucosa is inflamed, often after a cold, which impairs mucus drainage. Acute sinusitis usually lasts a few weeks and often clears up on its own. If symptoms last longer or keep coming back, we call this chronic sinusitis . Do your symptoms last longer than a few weeks, do they recur regularly, or come with high fever or persistent pain around the eyes? Discuss this with your GP; they can refer you to us. First step Nasal rinse and nasal spray Saline solution, short-term use of xylometazoline and a corticosteroid nasal spray reduce swelling and promote mucus drainage. For bacterial infection Antibiotics An antibiotic course is only prescribed when there are signs of a bacterial infection. For chronic symptoms Surgical treatment If symptoms persist long-term, sinus surgery can improve mucus drainage.
